Topics include the historical  development of astronomy, the structure, position  and   motion of objects within the universe, the life-  cycle of celestial objects, and the question of life  within the universe. EARTH SCIENCE  Length: Two Semesters CPT Code: 03001A000                                          Level: G Earth Science is the study of the relationship of  Earth within the solar system and universe as well  as the physical nature of earth itself.  Students  explore topics including the origins of the planet, the  geological methods for determining the age of  geologic objects, the methods by which mountains,  plains, valleys and bodies of water are created and  changed, and the interaction of organisms and the  physical planet.  Emphasis is placed on learning  strategies, organizational skills, note taking and  laboratory skills.  BIOLOGY  Length: Two Semesters CPT Code: 03051A000                                           Level: G Biology includes an in-depth study of the scientific  way of knowing and the definition of “life” from a  scientific vantage point.  Topics include the chemical  nature of life, the cellular composition of all-living  things, genetics, and biotechnology.  The second  semester surveys scientific theories on the  diversification of life, classification of organisms,  human systems, and the interaction of humans and  other biota within the biosphere.  Students should be  prepared for daily assignments including significant  reading, projects, and writing.  INTRODUCTION TO FORENSIC SCIENCE  Length: One Semester  CPT Code: 15053A000                                           Level: G This course involves components from all of the  sciences, especially anatomy, biology, chemistry,  earth science and physics.  It teaches students to  use critical thinking, deductive reasoning, laboratory  techniques and problem-solving skills.  These skills  are then related to  real-life situations and criminal  law cases.  Students use reality and research-based  activities to investigate complex     scenarios and  learn various scientific methods for solving these  problems. The course focuses on the following  overall student outcomes: 1) Apply scientific  laboratory processes and techniques to the solving  of a crime; 2) Determine and perform the most  appropriate method of testing samples while  obtaining the most accurate results; 3) Evaluate the  scientific accuracy of various fields of     forensic  science; and 4) Predict and appropriately  communicate the results of evidence collection and  evaluation.  Calculator required.  BOTANY  Length: One Semester  CPT Code: 03058A000                                           Level: E Botany provides students with an understanding of  plants, their life cycles, and their evolutionary  relationships.  PHYSICAL SCIENCE  Length: Two Semesters CPT Code: 03159A000                                          Level: G This course involves the study of the structures and  states of matter.  Topics covered may include: forms  of energy, wave phenomenon, electromagnetism,  and physical and chemical interactions.  CHEMISTRY  Length: Two Semesters CPT Code: 03101A000                                           Level: G Chemistry is an investigative course designed to  provide a solid base of scientific knowledge.  Major  topics covered include: the structure of matter,  chemical change and chemical reactions, organic  chemistry, energy, and acid/base interactions.  Students will engage in hands-on work, reading  strategies, and  written  expression.  Students should  be prepared to employ math skills, complete daily  assignments, and work cooperatively with others.  Scientific reasoning and problem solving, as well as  some self-directed learning are expected.  PHYSICS Length: Two Semesters CPT Code: 03151A000                                           Level: E Physics provides a background in the physical laws  that describe our universe.  Areas of study include  motion,  forces, energy, light electricity, magnetism  and optics.  This course involves some laboratory  experimentation and mathematical modeling  GEOLOGY  Length: One Semester  CPT Code: 03003A000                                           Level: G Geology introduces students to the fundamentals of  the Earth’s composition and physical character.  Topics include landforms and their evolution, plate  tectonics, the fossil records, and the physical  properties and compositions of rocks and minerals.  Atmospheric dynamics such as wind, rain, heat and  climate are also covered extensively, including  laboratory experiences designed to measure head,  motion, force and porosity.
